The new underpass at the Guangya Road / Bayi Road crossroads on the north-west corner of Liuzhou Square is very nearly ready to be opened after about a year or so of construction. It should be a welcome relief to traffic in the area. However, I foresee at least one problem. The sign clearly indicates [...]

Back in 2008, I mentioned the Guangxi Farmers’ Games competition. This was about a bunch of agriculturally inclined athletes competing in relevant events such the tyre rolling event, moving sandbags race, the rice planting race and the like. Now I am delighted to read in China Daily that the 2012 version is to be held [...]

Headlines indicating that a new species of human has been found in Guangxi came as no surprise to me. In fact, I’m fairly certain I have met some of them. There are a lot of odd people around. Most of them teaching English! It turns out that examination of a number of fossilised skulls and [...]

Over the years, I’ve found Yahoo Weather to be the most accurate of the weather forecasts on offer. By far the worst is the SMS service offered by Liuzhou Meteorological Bureau via China mobile. Its forecast is apparently determined by an intern sticking his thumb out of the window, determining the weather at the moment, [...]

Criticism has been levelled by various people - mostly in China Daily – about an apparent attempted cover up of the cadmium leak which led to Liuzhou’s drinking water crisis. Questions rightly being asked include “why was it not until Chinese New Year’s Eve (January 22nd) that there was any newspaper report in Liuzhou (and [...]

No text messages this morning, but here is a round up of the latest news. Feng Zhennian, deputy director of Guangxi’s environmental protection bureau told a press conference yesterday that tap water from all four of Liuzhou’s water treatment plants is safe for drinking. (I guess he means as safe as it ever was – [...]

The local rag is happily proclaiming today that it is snowing in Liuzhou. Well, technically, yes. It has been snowing in the north of Liuzhou Prefecture – hours north of the city. Sanjiang saw snow yesterday, but that is not uncommon. When they say snow they usually mean the lightest possible amount, although in 2008, [...]

According to People’s Daily, so it must be true, Liuzhou is about to host the “first China-ASEAN Automobile, Engineering Machinery and Spare Parts Exposition” This will apparently be held in from the 8th to 10th of December “in the newly built International Exhibition Center in Liuzhou”. What they really mean is “in the not yet [...]

Guangxi authorities have issued a warning about fake 100 yuan bills being circulated. These are particularly high quality – complete with watermarks, wire strips etc. The give away is the serial numbers. The fake bills are numbered LN37638309, LN37638313 and LN37638302. So, check those numbers. Also be sure when you hand a 100 yuan bill [...]

No I haven’t kicked the proverbial, though there were times I felt like kicking someone. The day got off to a bad start. I dragged myself out of bed after the third “snooze” reset of the alarm to find it was still closer to the time I usually go to bed than to the time [...]
