Holiday Drill

New Year’s Day is an official holiday in China. One day. But, as always, the locals find ways to extend it and convince themselves they have three days off, so they are also taking the 2nd off work, but will have to work Sunday to “make up”, a favourite phrase of theirs. (The third “day […]

A Liuzhou Pledge

This sign has appeared overnight on a wall near my home. Once again, the local thought police are kindly informing us how to be civilised. It is titled “Liuzhou City Civilisation Pledge”, then lists all the requisites of civilisation. My very rough translation follows. As you can see, they have compressed each point into a […]

Liuzhou S.W.A.T.

I’m a bit nervous to post this. If they don’t like it, they have the force to take me out. Liuzhou police have released a number of over-the-top propaganda images of their crack S.W.A.T (Special Weapons and Tactics) team – given the Hollywood treatment. These images all contain the atrocious “English” slogan, “Suffered We  Protect […]

Beware of Beards 2

Last month, I posted about some posters which appeared in Liuzhou showing, in cartoon form, dangerous men with beards. Here are more in the series.

Poisoning Vietnam

I’m not sure how much of this is true and how much is just silly propaganda, but it is being reported in the Vietnamese press (and certainly not being reported in the Chinese media). The two countries have recently been arguing about sovereignty of two tiny uninhabited rocks in the middle of nowhere which may […]

Public Transit City

China loves to give cities awards, for which they compete. Hours and fortunes are spent on this nonsense; school children are taken out of classes to take part in mind-numbing activities to promote efforts for whatever prize they are chasing. We get propaganda signs everywhere urging us to be clean so that we can be […]

A Little Good News on a Horrific News Day

On a day of horrible, senseless news from Kunming, a small piece of good news from Liuzhou. Mr Meng, the 76 year old man from Yufeng district who became the first, and so far the only person in Liuzhou to be diagnosed with avian flu H5N1 has made a full recovery. He was photographed yesterday […]

Beautiful Guangxi in Foreigners’ Eyes

As part of Guangxi government’s “Beautiful Guangxi and Clean Environment” campaign, it has been decided to hold an essay and photograph competition which they are calling “Beautiful Guangxi in Foreigners’ Eyes”. The theme of the contest is, and I quote, “beautiful scenery, beautiful story and beautiful people“. Contestants should “from different perspectives, depict and display […]

Guangxi’s Biggest Erection

As of Wednesday (20th November), Liuzhou is officially (if temporarily) the proud possessor of Guangxi’s tallest building. Although, it is nowhere near completion, the Diwang (地王) building on the northern side of Liuzhou People’s Square has reached a height which outstrips the previous record holder (in Nanning). The previous record was 303 metres. The building’s […]
