Thanks for letting us know. I would have missed this otherwise. Does Baijiu taste as bad as tequila?

  2. Robert Says:

yes Paul, it does. Possibly even worse

I actually quite like tequila, but would have agreed with you about Baijiu until about a year ago. Disgusting stuff. But, a year ago, I was fortunate enough to taste a premium Fenjiu (汾酒) which was wonderful. But then it was about 8000元 a bottle. Obviously, I wasn’t paying. And it was a big bottle. 1.8L

The worst tasting alcohol I have drunk in China is German wheat beer brewed under licence in Beijing

    @ Robert.

I have a Chinese friend who owns a chain of bars in Liuzhou. He asked me why I hadn’t visited any of his bars for some time. I told him straight – his foreign beers were too expensive and I actually prefer the lighter, local brews (he doesn’t stock any Chinese beer). He argued that they you need to factor in the cost of importing them from Germany/Belgium etc. I pointed out that they were brewed under licence in China and that the main ingredient is … water!

Another reason so many local bars and restaurants don’t stock local beers is , I’m told, that the locals are so used to buying it for next to nothing in local shops for next to nothing, that they are unwilling to pay the higher prices necessitated by higher overheads. Hmmm. Maybe.

I did have one friend who operated a bar/restaurant in downtown Liuzhou, who kept a stack of Liquan out the back, exclusively for him and me to drink!

All that said, the main reason I gave up on Liuzhou bars is the awful ambience they all have. Most of them can’t make up their minds if they are bars, restaurants, discos or pick-up joints. Guess, I just spent too much of my life in London locals, mumbling into my pint about the state of the world.

    That and the bad beer.
