I’m Amazed #2

Nanguo Jinbao - 20 December 2015

Nanguo Jinbao – 20 December 2015

For the last three weeks the local media have been banging on about car drivers giving precedence to pedestrians on crossings. There have been articles in the newspapers every day, as well as daily television and radio coverage. To my amazement it seems to be working!

You can hardly move down town for cars, buses and even taxis stopping to let you cross – even if you don’t want to!

Well, I’m exaggerating but only slightly. I was down town this morning and deliberately planned my stroll around town to include as many road crossings as possible. At every one, the traffic stopped to let me and other pedestrians cross.

Remember, this only applies to crossings not controlled by traffic lights.

Whether they’ll keep up this new politeness when the media move on to something else remains to be seen.

They have even come up with a slogan and a logo. It reads 你礼让, 我点赞, which translates as “You give way, I give praise”. It sounds better in Chinese.

Sorry for the image quality. It’s from the local rag and it’s rather small. I’ll replace it when I find a better one.

I think you’ve slid through a wormhole into a parallel universe

I live next to a busy road, which has three lanes of traffic in both directions, with no traffic calming measures whatsoever. The cars speed along this road. The pedestrian crossing has a central reservation comprising of the ubiquitous lightweight posts for protection, as the traffic whizzes past within a couple of feet either side of you. I’m sure many of you will have experienced this and know how vunerable you can feel.

Whilst I have noticed that more vehicles ARE giving way to pedestrians (I even had a taxi do this for me the other day!) there are still not enough drivers who are complying. So while it is very good that one driver has stopped and is waving me across – I still don’t have the confidence that others will follow suit, indeed they mostly don’t. At least before I pretty much knew they wouldn’t stop and made allowances for this – now I wonder will they or won’t they?
