Random thoughts on life in Liuzhou, Guangxi, China

I’m Amazed #1

Liuzhou Hotel, the government owned place which unsurprisingly has five stars (the government award the stars) have published the menu for their Christmas dinner in the “western” restaurant, Prince.

Of course, they have no idea about western food and serve everything at random. Last time I was there, my soup turned up after dessert and half the menu was “sold out” ten minutes into lunchtime.

The menu features three set meals at various (high) prices, but you do get a “free gift”. If anyone is rash enough to go, please tell me what the gift was!

Here are the menus. Click on the image to enlarge in a new window.

The cause of my amazement is that the menu, while not perfect, is on the whole understandable. The hotel has long been known for the ineptness of their translations. Here is the Christmas menu from a few years back. Again, click to enlarge.

I’d tell you what the Chinese really says, but wouldn’t want to spoil the fun!

    No no, tell me 🙂

    @ Shelby

    OK. You asked for it.

The first three characters are 猕猴桃 【míhóutáo】 which is Actinidia chinensis, a fruit native to China and not related to gooseberry!

Then we have 烟火鸡 【yān huǒ jī】 which is smoked turkey.

Then we have 沙律 【shā lì】 which is a misprint for 沙拉 【shā lā】 meaning salad.

So it is Actinidia chinensis smoked turkey salad.

Ha ha, I can see that….makes sense in a way…..sootiness/smoked…..
