Micro-Snails

Are you feeling at all short-changed with your portion of Liuzhou’s signature dish, 螺蛳粉 Luosifen? Missing some depth of flavour?

It could be that the purveyor, instead of using regular river snails to make the soup base, is using these recently discovered snails.

snail

Snail in eye of needle.

The shell measures a mere 0.86 millimetres, making it the world’s smallest land snail. (There is a sea snail which is even smaller.)

Angustopila dominikae has been found in limestone rocks here in Guangxi. Bizarrely, they are related to African land snails which are some 9 million times larger.

I’m trying to work out how many I need to make a bowl of luosifen, but my calculator doesn’t handle numbers that large.
