A Little Good News on a Horrific News Day

On a day of horrible, senseless news from Kunming, a small piece of good news from Liuzhou.

Mr Meng, the 76 year old man from Yufeng district who became the first, and so far the only person in Liuzhou to be diagnosed with avian flu H5N1 has made a full recovery. He was photographed yesterday with his wife and hospital staff before being discharged.

Of course, a red propaganda sign had to get in there somewhere. They never rest.

May I ask about the horrible, senseless news from Kunming ? What is it ?

  2. Liuzhou Laowai Says:

    Er, try any news site.

Living under a rock, are you Noel? Check China Daily, US edition. Strangely, I haven’t seen anything about it on US news services!

If anything has been printed it must be deep inside the local fish wrap. Ditto TV news

  4. Liuzhou Laowai Says:

It was on the front page of the Wall Street Journal (and still is today) and on the front page of the New York Times.

  5. Carl Johnson Says:

Yes, I suppose it was. I don’t get those down here.
But I never saw a word about it on network news. All the talk is about the Ukraine. Our local daily hasn’t mentioned it.
I have absolutely no interest in what goes on in New York, on or off Wall Street.
Gannet owns our little paper along with USA Today, I think and I would have thought I would have seen it there.
Then again, maybe I missed it?

I have zero interest in “Wall Street’ or New York either, but I will recommend the WSJ for its excellent coverage of all things China, not that I always agree. But I’m disagreeable!

  7. Carl Johnson Says:

My friend in Bangkok informs me almost daily of the bombings and violent demonstrations in Thailand, complete with bloody photos and a body count, yet I almost never hear anything about it here. I guess we are a very provincial little backwater.

Yes, Carl, I’m literally living under a glacier here in lake-effect land. Finally saw some detailed coverage only today. The US news services are pounding the Crimea situation; the best text coverage I’ve read so far has been on dubya dubya dubya dot ky3 dot com slash news slash nation slash Families-reel …….. looks to be sourced from (surprisingly) CNN, whose coverage today has been almost exclusively Crimean conflict.

  9. Carl Johnson Says:

    My Dear L.L.
I find you quite agreeable! I, also, am a Curmudgeon!
Perhaps I should check out WSJ online to find more things I disagree with? Thanks for recommendation!
