Update Update

I can’t believe it. Well, I can. The ludicrous antics of Noodle Box are continuing. After opening and closing their restaurant a week later, then lying deserted for a month, the place has re-opened.  How long for is anyone’s guess. I can’t see a place this amateurish lasting long.

Friday Food 98 – Fats and Oils (Part 3)

Friday food is a weekly article about one of the more unusual food items to be found in Liuzhou that week. This week, the last oil slick. In this (probably last) section on oils, I look at what I call the condiment oils and flavoured oils. That is oils which are used in cooking, but […]

Not Walmart but Starbucks

Rush attempts are being made to finish in time to open the first phase of the new Diwang shopping complex in the development on the northern edge of Liuzhou People’s Square. They desperately want to open for the National Day holiday, one of the two so-called golden weeks, which takes place next week. Of course, […]

According to a report from China Radio International (CRI), a Liuzhou man has been arrested for tweeting that he intended to bomb a local businessman’s Bentley. The suspect, named only as Jiang was tracked down through the internet bar he posted from and has been in custody since Tuesday. Reading between the lines in the […]

Luoziwei Luosifen

“Heaven! I’m in heaven!” Well, reasonably satisfied. This afternoon, I discovered that the empty unit next to Mom’s Pizza, which is only the length of a noodle away from my home, is to open shortly as 螺滋味 螺蛳粉 – Luoziwei Luosifen. They were literally hanging up the sign as I walked past. Although there are […]

Flagging Rats

Over the last couple of weeks, these little flags have been popping up in grass verges, flower beds etc all over town. Their existence did register somewhere at the back of my conciousness or subconscious (or unconscious – ed), but I didn’t really pay much attention. Until today. I was walking home and came across […]

Secret Supermarket

From time to time, I buy the odd vegetable or banana in what I call the secret supermarket. It is on 北站路 but is hidden away at the back of what appears to be a bedding shop. I once met a couple from New Zealand who lived almost next door for a year and didn’t […]
