Random Picture No. 17 – Night Market, July 2003

Seventeenth in a series of pictures, taken in Liuzhou, which amuse or interest me.

Night Market

I was recently rummaging around in some old photo albums and came across this blast from the past which brought back memories. It is of the night market which used to be at the bottom end of what is now the pedestrian street. It ran from where the main Xinhua bookshop is now (besides McDonalds) down towards the river.

It was a glorious mixture of cheap clothes stalls and wonderful snack stalls, particularly Muslim kebab stalls. Many a happy munch was held there until one day, shortly after I took this picture, it just disappeared. A sad day. All part of Liuzhou's misguided decision to sterilise the city centre and turn it into a soulless desert.
