Random thoughts on life in Liuzhou, Guangxi, China

Guangxi 50

Zhuang Banner

It was only a year ago that I /zhuang_1.htm” target=”_blank” title=”Zhuang”>said that Liuzhou's Zhuang language translator could have a well earned rest. On that occasion we were celebrating the 50th anniversary of the introduction of a written system for the language, based in Roman letters.

What I had forgotten was the much more important 50th anniversary of the foundation of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region which takes place next week (11th December).

Once again, the city is bedecked with the usual red propaganda banners, but now with added Zhuang. Most of the time they don't bother. As I mentioned before, despite the name, there is, of course, no real autonomy. The only guarantee is that the regional governor must be of the Zhuang nationality, but, as the party boss (invariably Han) is more powerful anyway, this means nothing.

We are being regaled with propaganda and various events are being planned. Liuzhou Museum is frantically redecorating its building and will be holding some special exhibits.

I'll probably come back to this when things really come together (or fall apart.)
