Liuzhou Laowai

Random thoughts on life in Liuzhou, Guangxi, China

10 year sentence

About a year ago, the sordid dive that was Liuzhou’s zoo moved from the city centre’s Liuhou park to a new site on the edge of town. I haven’t been and have no intentions of ever going. Chinese zoos leave a lot to be desired.

So I felt sorry to hear of two poor creatures who have been sentenced to “between 8 and 10 years” in the local zoo.

菲菲 fēi fēi and 洲洲 zhōu zhōu are two elephant ladies and are nine years old each.

Somewhat worryingly, these two names together make 非洲  which is Chinese for ‘Africa’. Doesn’t the zoo realise that they are, in fact, Indian elephants (from Thailand.)? In Chinese, they are known as Asian elephants. Makes sense!

Saddest of all, is that the report goes on to say that they will be trained to ‘entertain the public’.  Great!
